This is great! Several times I've wanted to walk from Crystal City (National Landing?) but was deterred by unfriendly road design / lack of pedestrian infrastructure.
Voters in W3 backed a Mayor and CM who supported the Conn Ave safety project. Then the Mayor inexplicably abandoned it - and DDOT never gave "great weight" to the 4 ANCs. Anyway, it will be interesting to hear what mayoral candidates in 2024 promise W3 voters re: road safety projects.
W3 voters voted heavily in support of Bowser in the primary and general election. Not only that, W3 voters picked a Dem CM in the primary that supported the W3 project (I believe all of them did!) - and then soundly rejected the GOP nominee who based his campaign opposing the W3 safety project.
What's frustrating is this isn't even a case where voters have simply rejected something. Bowser's DDOT proposed an ambitious W3 road safety project, it was supported by all 4 ANCs, and Bowser in Dec 2021 gave full support to that W3 project. How did W3 voters react in 2022 when they voted?
And the problem is simply we have elected a Mayor and DC Council that have repeatedly shown they don't care all that much about making progress on Vision Zero. They are unwilling to dedicate adequate resources or pursue the type of safety policies or projects that would help us reach our goal.
We had something similar at Chevy Chase Day last Saturday at public library/community center. Cars were supposed to clear out of parking lot by certain time to give people more space (parking lot was used for bounce house, firetruck, etc.) but they didn't - don't think they were even ticketed.
