Friendly reminder that most of the problems in American politics are at the *elite* level. So every news lede or headline that begins with "Americans are hopelessly divided" should be "American *elites* are hopelessly divided."

Not sure that I agree here. The subset of political engaged Americans are deeply divided. A lot of the elite dysfunction today only occurs when they are watching.

But real headline should be, "Far-right social movement takes over major political party; divides country." Any serious analysis has to deal with that fact.
