The book explores the puzzle of nasty politics—why do politicians insult, accuse, and threaten their domestic political opponents if the public generally doesn't like it?

Using data from Ukraine, Israel, and the U.S., I offer three explanations: 1) It gets attention, which can be useful to peripheral, opposition, or party leaders fearful of losing.
