Sauron, with his unceasing watch on his foes, sees a group of eagles cross into Mordor heading for Mt. Doom, and makes the volcano erupt to incinerate or asphyxiate them all.

Assuming being so close to the Ring doesn't drive one of the eagles to want to possess it themself so they do what they can to make that hobbit splatter on the ground below.
