To this point, it’s not so much about influencing someone’s politics, but influencing norms and expectations for describing behavior accurately and ethically. As big papers, there is a massive downstream impact on how politics are covered elsewhere.

True. In my mind, it’s sort of like late-term Reagan, where the theory is he was just dragged around and did what his handlers said because of dementia. Trump is told to go out and play the hits and just sort of goes along. Just my theory.

I think this was a more purposeful pivot following the debate. When they lost all those donors, they realized Trump himself is the campaign’s biggest liability.

It’s full on cognitive dissociation. It’s why she’s disconnected from reality in so many other ways (election denial, anti-vax, etc.)

She made this case 2 years ago when she spoke at my university on a conservative “The State of Journalism” panel. I directly asked her about rescinding her original apology, and she basically argued they forced that and she didn’t mean it.
