Removing masking fluid ia about as much of "an experience" as applying it. So for the effect of the haze/fumes/smoke/whateverrrrr I am doinf an underpainting with acrylic gouache. Thia gouache just like acrylic paint will dry permanent but it has a less viscuous texture perfect for what's next.
