Which is why Sony learned their lesson on the Compact Disc and worked with Phillips on a standard that was free to use as long you adhered to the ‘Red book’ standard.
I wouldn’t say they exactly learned their lesson, given the rootkit debacle and the BluRay business, but yeah Red Book audio was a masterstroke
