"The two main influences seem to me to be art and philosophy," explained Mike Fontaine, a classics professor at Cornell University. "A friend of mine..a committed Buddhist, was convinced that the Greek philosophy of Epicureanism was ripped off from Buddhism," Fontaine continued.
"There's no proof, but the two sure do seem to share some parallels."
Influence was presumably a two-way street.
"Epicureanism and Buddhism both developed around the same time, the fifth century B.C., and stress pursuing wisdom, overcoming desire, achieving inner peace, and living an ethical life," said Fontaine.
Yet, despite this intermingling, Greek accounts of their campaigns in India reveal a surprising absence of recognition for many aspects of Indian civilization. The writings omit discussions of the burgeoning Buddhism, leaving out descriptions of majestic, intricate stupas. Instead, the Greeks mostly overlooked the beliefs, practices, and architectural marvels of Indian society.
