Yup! Those are aphids and the ants are looking after them.

(No aphids are harmed in the completion of this event. We specifically have it outlined via science, by a woman in wall-riding roller skates with a portable DJ deck, how we prevent harm to the aphids while saving them. Just gettin that out there for aphid rights folks.)

Damn, the final Children of the Echoes quest went a lot of places I did not see coming *at all*. Like…I can’t even. Have lost all ability to even. Can I even say that with certainty? Dunno; outta even. And then to follow it up with a weeklong event where we catch pumpkin-sized aphids!

I see the flowers most days, but today I stopped to see a mini world. Didn't look like the ants were harassing the caterpillar but my eyes aren't what they used to be

Close up photo of a flower bud in late afternoon sunlight. There are various ants around a caterpillar and some aphids, and some stairs and trees in the background

there are different kinds of aphids so it could be that, but the black sticky stuff is definitely not them, i'm not sure what that's about. i am guessing you're not interested in pesticides so you could try spraying the plant with water mixed with a little liquid dish soap, that might help!there are different kinds of aphids so it could be that, but the black sticky stuff is definitely not them, i'm not sure what that's about. i am guessing you're not interested in pesticides so you could try spraying the plant with water mixed with a little liquid dish soap, that might help!

any fellow plant people able to identify what's eating my basil? the damage itself made me think aphids but nothing else matches my prior experience with them!

The underside of a thin basil leaf. There is a black, sticky substance right along the leaf stem, alongside some very small, black dots. Some of the leaf appears semi-transparent, being half-eaten.
The stem of a basil plant, covered with lots of tiny, black dots. Each dot is smaller than a poppy seed.
The top of a basil leaf, with a smear of a sticky black substance stuck to it. It looks kinda like bird poop.

a gardener's dilemma I never encountered until today. I've always wished for ladybugs to come and eat the aphids from my roses & milkweed. But now I need to pull up all the old bean plants (neglected the entire month of Sept) but I can't b/c it's a ladybug colony! Bad and good, both at once! 🌱

the gardener spotted two ladybugs on these relatively healthy green bean plant leaves and cooed, how lovely, so glad to see you little darlings!
then the gardener began to notice more & more little red ladybugs on the green relatively healthy but definitely neglected bean plants.
to her horror, the gardener spotted two ladybugs getting it on under her very nose. In the middle of the afternoon!
finally, the gardener began shaking ladybugs off the worst of the neglected bean plants and allowing the ladybugs to shift to ground work. Here, three ladybugs try to figure out what to do now that they're on bare earth.

They milk aphids, so they probably made dairy cows for ants, and put them to work.

What in the hell. I will put aphids on their stringy old kale.
