always a space. it's because cis and trans are both adjectives. they are modifying the gender by specifying the time. consider a hat. if the hat were blue, it would be a blue hat, not a bluehat. the distinction is important because transphobes like to do a fun little rhetorical trick of separation
(aside from the unaware, such as yourself) because transphobes like to do a cute little rhetoric trick of saying that "transman" is a separate category from "man" and vice versa, rather than a sub category. consider a hat that happens to be blue. it'd be a blue hat, not a bluehat.
side note, space between trans and the gender! trans is an adjective for a type of gender (as is cis), comparable to how a blue hat wouldn't be "bluehat". to answer the question: depends on a lot of factors. it's more segregated than not i'd say. tend to be a lot more trans mascs irl than online.
