Bailey et al, 2022: Tests using a "cough machine" showed that coughing with an elbow in front of one's mouth resulted in some of the worst viral contamination up to 4m away. Covering coughs with one's hand, fist, or elbow simply redirects the particles. www.reddit.com/r/COVIDZero/...

"With the unmitigated cough, the cough travelled from the mouth and formed a cloud (Figure 7A). This elongated and gently dispersed. When a cupped hand was placed in front of the mouth (test B) the particle cloud was diverted from a forward plane and escaped the hand as a “star” pattern in a flat vertical plane (Figure 7B). A bare elbow (test C) was shown to divert the particle burst above and below the elbow, while still being propelled forward (Figure 7C). This cloud was seen to recombine as it travelled further from the cough origin."
"Visualisation tests undertaken with a balled fist showed that it did not deflect the cough like the cupped hand over the mouth, but resulted in wider and less elongated cloud dissemination, (Figure 8)."

Antibody titres against wild-type, BA.5, XBB.1.5, EG.5.1, HV.1, HK.3, JD.1.1, & JN.1 after XBB.1.5 monovalent vaccine administration, XBB infection, & omicron infection followed by XBB.1.5 monovalent vaccine administration. Titres against all variants rose. They were more or less the same (1x to -1.2x) between XBB.1.5 & EG.5.1, but were 2.9x lower for XBB.1.5 monovalent vaccine recipients, 4.3x lower for XBB-infected people, & 3.4x lower for omicron-infected & XBB.1.5 vaccinated people. Titres were highest for the latter group.

The frustration can be valid, even if it's not a justification for ending masking. The difficulties is communication are definitely valid for the former! We could all be safely unmasked if the people in power had taken a #COVIDzero approach. Heck, they still could. If they wanted to. If.
