I'm fairly sure Brazilian portuguese has the same rules on masculine and feminine as castillian spanish, so that seems wrong to me You'd use the feminine form if the cat was a girl, masculine if you don't know. The owners gender shouldn't matter.

Had a tenuous hold on Spanish (ok, Castillian) for the past week and am now totally destroyed by Portuguese. Quickly amended “gracias” to “abrigado” but whoa. This stuff is crazy.
