An old, burnt out vessel lies in the River Ouse's old channel just opposite High Street in Newhaven. All I know is that its name is Sheer Magic and it was burnt when it was to be removed. Otherwise, I don't know its story, but I would like to. #CoastalHistory#MaritimeHistory#SussexCoast

Photo of the boat's port side. It's laying on the river bank at low tide, so it's in the mud. The photo is taken from the main ring road around Newhaven, and the bridge to Denton Island can be seen on the right. What would have been wood is gone; the metal is rusted.
Close up photo of the bow, showing the ropes still hanging down into the mud. The upper housing is all rust coloured. It is sitting in mud with clumps of seaweed growing around it.
Photo of the vessel taken from the Denton Island bridge, showing it's stern. Green algae is growing halfway up the sides, showing how much is submerged during high tide.

Beat to Quarters!! The 2024-25 academic year is beginning! We're looking forward to meeting our new cohort and welcoming back last year's part-timers tomorrow -- Tuesday -- at 4pm BST. #NavalHistory#MaritimeHistory#CoastalHistory

Photo of a drum hanging below deck in HMS Victory, in Portsmouth. 'Beat to Quarters' was a signal for men to take down the walls and bedding and to prepare for battle in sailing ships. We're not exactly going to battle, but we are starting out on our learning voyage!

What a great writing session! The #CoastalHIstory Writing group has reconvened, & everyone's projects are so fascinating. We talked rivers & coasts; heritage, history & literature; archival & oral research; and fishing & shore harvest. We all had a productive few hours and made new connections.

Photo on the Sussex beach at low tide, showing the rocky shingle in the foreground, and eroded chalk stalks in the middle distance. They look almost like tiny seaweed covered statues. Seawater is in some of the gullies. It looks like an alien landscape, but it's just the foreshore.

Not great photography weather -- too hazy and bright. It's hard to believe that Seaford was an important medieval harbour. No harbour now, just shingle hauled in for beach nourishment. Seaford Head now has a sharp shelf, reminding me of all the recent cliff falls. #CoastalHistory

Photo taken towards the east along the shingle beach, showing Seaford Head, the round Martello Tower at the base, and white and green beach huts along the left side. There are people in front of the huts, as well as down towards the water. The sky is blue and hazy.

As there seemed to be a bit of interest in it, I've set up a Maritime History feed - click on bsky.app/profile/axe9...#MaritimeHistory#CoastalHistory posted in the last week. Any pic suggestions?

Oil painting by artist James E. Buttersworth, ca 1871, titled Magic and Gracie off Castle Garden. The painting shows two sailing vessels in the foreground, and other sailing ships and the coast in the background. The sky is cloudy but the lighting is still relatively bright.
