Something I knew: fuel consumption (eg l/100km) is a surface. Something I didn't know: the physical interpretation is the crossection of a tube with length = distance travelled. Vol then corresponds to fuel used. Found that out by reading about birds pooping in your mouth: what-if.xkcd.com/11/
It's akin to the idea of one dimensionality to two dimensionality to three, to four, to .. It stretches the mind by asking. Could you "see" the "crossection" of light? Or is it only "visible" in the reflection from? And that is without the wave/particle complications...

If you want to get creative/interactive with it, get a bunch of stills from Is It Cake, hand them each 3 or four of them, specifically not giving the cake crossection to some of them, disallow them from being able to show their stills to anyone else and then have them argue about it for 5-10 mins.
