P.S. Different series! That's character Adam Dalgliesh, written by PD James. SPECTACULAR and highly recommended. This is the DI Duncan series, written by JM Dalgliesh. I think the first book has been adapted for TV? He's up to book 4 (5?), and it's very solid.

The Dalgliesh series is police procedural on Skye. It's not twee, despite the Scottish setting. Again, an ensemble cast that re-appears and whose lives I care about. Lots of exploring family dynamics & parental abuse, how it plays out over time.

My worst superpower is being able to look at a Dorset quarry in an episode of Dalgliesh and go, “Ah yes, this was Skaro in ‘Destiny of the Daleks’.”

Last night I discovered there's a new TV adaptation based on PD James's Adam Dalgliesh mysteries ("new" = "it's into its second season"), and now I'm tempted to watch it, but also see how far I get into a reread before James's conservativism gets too annoying.
