Welcome to the Howling Fens of Fennelor. A realm of dark, fantastical heresy and brilliant, incandescent truth. #TTRPG ♠️ Vagrant Sun = the setting. ♠️ Vagrant SRD (VSRD) = the game. ♠️ The Howling Fens of Fennelor = the realm. ♠️ The Vagrant Sun Motif (TVSM) = the soundtrack.

Took a stroll out to Moreton's Leam on the River Nene Washes after the recent rain and the Washes had been opened to contain the excess of water trying to get out to sea. Everything still flooded, rather there than here. Bronica Etrs, Ilford HP5,Bellini Euro HC. #believeinfilm#photography

A black and white image of trees submerged in water after recent heavy rainfall. This is Moreton's Leam on the River Nene Washes in the Cambridgeshire Fens, an area of low lying reclaimed land in the East of England. The Washes are maintained and put aside to be used after periods of heavy rainfall or high tides when the volumes of water are more than the River Nene can cope with and threaten to flood local communities. The Washes are nearly 4000 acres in size and when needed act as a containment resevoir to permit a controlled release of water further downstream. They are used for sheep grazing and hosts a remarkable amount of wetland birdlife.

There's a Cambridgeshire fens version of Black Shuck, too. Oh, and the "Fen Tiger".

If Monks Wood is anything to go by, keenly scrutinising the autumn flocks, like I did last weekend and every autumn, is a mug's game! On paper last weekend was looking perfect (big arrival shortly before, <60 km inland, first big wood after crossing the coast & Fens) - but nope!

It’s like meeting Spartacus, or his son, therefore Spartacus has become rather quickly morphed into D-Fens.

Quinces for baked goods. This is the way. 🌱

A box of a dozen or so not quite ripe quinces and a couple of dark green leaves, the young tree seems to be a lot happier in the wind now it doesn’t have it’s limbs flailing like a morningstar around the place. The other quince, a siberian I’ll keep hold of as that fruit seems much happier this year. A small tab for baked goods in return. Love the fens.

Well I absolutely loved Waterland - a wonderful shaggy-dog story of a novel that drew me in from the off and then set me down among the vast skies and ditches of the Fens, while the centuries and the weather turned about me. Into the weekend with Leonard and Hungry Paul by @ronanhession.bsky.social

Waterland by Graham Swift lying on a teal coloured cushion.
Leonard and Hungry Paul by Rónán Hession on a wooden table. A handless lilac cup containing coffee sits alongside.
