Is there a link between Musk’s strong support for Trump and Tesla’s need/hope for a fast FMVSS exemption for its robotaxi? Recall Cruise/GM long and fruitless wait for an FMVSS exemption for the Origin automated vehicle.
Battery packs are sealed and are tested in submersion tests to pass FMVSS regulations before released to production. Sustained submersion will eventually increase the possibility of failures as they are cars not submarines. It is a very bad failure mode.
The easiest thing regulators can do is add ISO 26262 to FMVSS.
I was kinda surprised that amounted to a formal recall, frankly... because I didn't realize rear view cameras had become a FMVSS requirement.
