Otash was born in 1922, I'm guessing that if Ellroy used him along the Gittes timeline, he'd be a WW1 vet, not WW2, and he'd have made his big break helping frame up Fatty Arbuckle. Gittes was a much smaller fry; of course a Menjou memento would have a place of honor for such a striver.
And yeah, I don't mean that he was fatphobic because he brought up that being big can have correlation with apnoea, I mean the way he went about was overly blunt, and it felt like he was reluctant to actually refer me for treatment instead of just going "lol lose weight fatty"
