TODAY IN HISTORY: October 2, 1789 - The United States Bill of Rights was sent to the various States for ratification. Largely because of the efforts of Representative James Madison, who studied the deficiencies of the Constitution pointed out by Anti-Federalists.
The idea that one party becoming unviable would end democracy totally ignores the fact that we used to be Federalists and Democratic Republicans.
In 1798-1800, Federalists claimed Jacobin sympathizers were trying to overthrow the US gov't, requiring the Alien & Sedition Acts to defeat the conspiracy - but really to suppress their political opposition (Democratic-Republicans). Was this the first form of redbaiting?
This country has been deeply confused ever since the nationalists at the Constitutional Convention started calling themselves the Federalists, forcing the actual federalists to call themselves anti-Federalists. The Constitution doesn't give POTUS that authority.
