of Hiroshima it does so with a lightness of touch that lets it work as a big dumb monster movie too. Strongly recommended and the perfect antidote to the most recent Western 'Monsterverse' take on Godzilla, which cost roughly 20 times the budget and was objectively rubbish. #Film24 [26]

their lives around him, failing and - ultimately - fighting back. The human characters have depth and while the film does use Godzilla as a sort of all-purpose metaphor for everything from Japanese war guilt to the devastation #Film24 [25]

Godzilla Minus One (Takashi Yamazaki, 2023) I honestly was not prepared for how good this is. This is Godzilla done as a historical post-WW2 drama. The creature is presented as an implacable force of nature and the real story is in the efforts of the human survivors to try and live #Film24 [24]

I would guess almost none of that went on the special effects, which are all very homemade looking. It makes very little sense and there is at least a 50/50 chance it will annoy the living shit out of you. I liked it though. I think. #Film24 [23]

Lake Michigan Monster (Ryland Brickson Cole Tews, 2018) Did I enjoy this? I think I did. Ryland Brickson Cole Tews and his pals have crafted in a very literal sense of the word a sort of parody of black & white exploitation horror flicks. It looks like it cost about $3.56 to make and #Film24 [22]

the action on top of a portrayal of a dystopian but very recognisable modern India. The stunts and fight choreography here are very cool indeed though and Dev Patel is such a natural movie star. #Film24 [21]

Monkey Man (Dev Patel, 2024) Dev Patel wrote, directed, acted in and probably did the catering for this brilliant John Wickalike. In fact it is what you might get if the Wick films actually had a point to make other than 'these stunts are cool' as Patel layers #Film24 [20]

Then they find one which taps into something very old and very unpleasant. The bloody ending doesn't quite work but there are some great performances, especially Olwen Fouéré as the witchy keeper of an old folk song and Catherine Siggins as a rival song-collector. #Film24 [19]

All You Need Is Death (Paul Duane, 2023) Very odd and affecting Irish folk-horror that reminded me a lot of Peter Strickland's oddball world building. A young couple travel hunt rare folk songs which they sell on what appears to be a healthy black market. #Film24 [18]
