CS is unusual in how strongly it segregates scholarship by subfield — unlike many fields, there’s no venue that publishes top work in all subfields. Plus, interdisciplinary CS isn’t viewed as a subfield at all, but is about 17% of CS faculty (more than HCI): cacm.acm.org/research/sub...

The weird part is it's a circular ranking. Mathematicians look down on engineers who patronize HCI folks who condescend to mathematicians.

I wonder which other fields rely as heavily as Computer Science on labeling faculty by area (i.e., you're either AI, ML, theory, systems, security, HCI). I find this counterproductive/stifling in so many ways.

I feel like these are — or should be — strongly related projects. To do what they need to do, NLP / HCI is going to need a better model of culture than a Q&A dataset about etiquette

Late to the party w this one. Remarkable paper and commentaries. I need to think a lot harder about it, but the tldr is; Most hypothesis tests tell us nothing about how psych phenomena generalise. Hard for psych. V serious for quant in applied fields like HCI www.cambridge.org/core/journal...
