in my view this is a bit unfair to Ed Miliband who wasn't standing on a particularly outlandish platform - I think a lot of the history post-2015 election defeat paints it as a lurch to the left and not some mild social-democratic wrangling. It was mostly indyref fallout that scuppered Ed.

Gay marriage one unarguable victory of the Cameron era but opposed by large section of party and likely would have happened within a few years under any government. Won Indyref but can't run a 2029 campaign on that.

Surely the key here is unionist consent for another indyref. So recognising both side of the debate (probably the hardest part) and waiting for both to agree on another indyref would be the time to hold one.

The "Dugdale-Noon" report inspired significant, constructive debate at yesterday's Centre on Constitutional Change conference for the indyref 10th anniversary. But wonks, activists, and academics can only carry these things so far, no matter how good the ideas. They need political engagement.

Ah, #IndyRef what would harken the next 10 years of UK politics as it brought the SNP to the national stage. The party would be a big electoral force, mainting strong number of seats at the next couple elections until this year's one. It was also an issue the SNP kept going on about during Brexit.
