a 5 page one piece fancomic about kin’emon and kanjuro. page 1. panel 1: kin’emon’s silhouette is illuminated in a doorway. in front of him are stairs, leading down into a makeshift prison like the ones in udon. a voice calls, “kin’emon?” panel 2: kin’emon’s hand touches the wall. the voice asks, “is that you?” panel 3: kin’emon steps further down the stairs. he replies, “yes.” panel 4: kin’emon stands in muted horror, perhaps also a little sad. the voice asks, “did you come to finish it?” and he says, “not yet.” panel 5: kanjuro sits, grouchy and sulking. he has no makeup on, and he is half in shadow.
page 2. panel 1: kanjuro says, “why not? give me my sword, if you will not do it.” kin says, “you cannot goad me.” kanjuro says, “i did not think you’d ever be so cruel, even to a great enemy.” panel 2: a closeup of kanjuro’s eye as he adds, “much less one wearing the face of a friend.” kin asks, “are you asking me for pity?” panel 3: kanjuro in his canon look says, “i am asking you to help me. mercy, kin, mercy!” panel 4: kanjuro returns to his present look, frowning. kin says, “please do not act at me, kanjuro. kurozumi-san. whatever you’d like to call
 this THING.” panels 5 & 6: in a vague flashback to their days as retainers, kin stands in the water, reaching toward kanjuro. he takes kin’s hand and leans to kiss it. kanjuro speaks over the memory, “but you understand, do you not? kin’emon, i vowed to play a role, and i vowed to die. an oath made before we even knew one another! the finale has come and gone. the only thing left is the end.” kin asks, “did you ever love me?”
page 3. panel 1: kanjuro answers, “no, kin. i don’t
 do THAT.” kin’emon stands outside the cell, frowning and looking in where kanjuro sits. panel 2: kanjuro’s blob form frowns as kanjuro adds, “the thing i am in truth, well, it is no thing at all.” panel 3: kin’emon’s silhouette looks in at kanjuro. they are in opposite colors. kin’emon says, “you didn’t need to PRETEND quite to that extreme.” panel 4: half of kin’emon’s horrified face is visible. kanjuro continues, “the role did get away from me there. OH, the sublimation of a character’s motivations! i suppose it is the actor’s folly. i do not know why.” panel 5: kanjuro is still half in light and shadow. he smiles finally, hands raised in mirth as he says, “you may as well ask the kanjuro of the evening.”
