Lan Wangji can only stare wide eyed as scales appear around Wei Wuxian’s face, those slit eyes focused only on him as his face hovering above him moves closer. “Wei Ying?”
At the name, Wei Wuxian’s hands tighten on Lan Wangji’s forearms, nails digging into the fabric as he moves closer. Lan Wangji flinched as Wei Wuxian ran his nose along the column of his neck, a steady purr reverberating against their chests. “Wei Ying!” Wei Wuxian couldn’t hear anything besides the voice urging him on and the loud beating in his ears, the desire too strong as the heat engulfed him. He lay his full weight on Lan Wangji, erection grinding against his thigh as he nuzzled his face in the crook of Lan Wangji’s neck, taking in his scent.
Pretty and he’s all mine. Unable to help himself, he licks that sweet spot.

Lan Jingyi throws him an indignant look. “Jin Ling! We’ve been on how many night-hunts together, and you think Lan musical cultivation is about randomly strumming our guqins?”

“How should I know?” Jin Ling huffs. “I thought it was all about the spiritual energy you infuse in the sound.”

“If it was only about spiritual energy, why would I spend so many hours every week studying and practicing?”

“Maybe it’s because you're not very smart.”

No. Wei Wuxian cuts that thought off before it can form and shifts to his side, his back to the table upon which the unfinished letter still lies.

Stupid, to have thought about it at all. And it’s also probably stupid to continue on to Gusu. That would just mean his brain will constantly think about it the closer he gets to Lan Zhan, even if he’s already decided that he wouldn’t actually bother Lan Zhan this trip. So, Wei Wuxian decides that in the morning, he and Little Apple will turn right around and get lost somewhere in the wide jianghu, until these silly thoughts are buried and gone. He shuts his eyes and wills sleep to come.

(In the morning, he and Little Apple head in the direction of Gusu, and Wei Wuxian calls himself a fool.)

Lan Zhan!
This humble one apologizes for such a long length of time since the last letter, but I know the merciful and gracious Hanguang-jun will forgive this one.

Wei Wuxian chuckles lowly as he tips the jar of wine up and takes a hearty drink. He knows Lan Zhan would never do something as common as roll his eyes, but he’s sure the man will radiate the sentiment with all his being as he reads the letter’s opening.

He makes himself comfortable and then glances at the nearby tables. One is a smaller table where two elderly men are quietly drinking tea and playing weiqi. Another is a larger table with a group of women discussing an upcoming wedding. He surmises that this inn serves more as a communal gathering place for the town than a place for travelers, which serves his purposes this evening just fine. He’ll relax, enjoy his meal, and see if the lovely ladies can provide interesting or entertaining information.

By the time a server has taken his order and delivered his food and wine, he thinks he knows the names of just about every granny and auntie in the town and all their opinions on the wedding planning, especially the ones no one asked for. And after a few bites of his meal, the bride herself rushes into the inn and practically throws herself onto the women’s table, bemoaning her woes to everyone who would listen. Wei Wuxian hides his smile behind his cup of wine as he eagerly watches

"I am not but I am not the one who made these concessions. Surprisingly my son, who I always thought too strict and mature for his age, was the one to bend the rules for them to stay. He just could not let these little ones go."

"How come?"

She shrugged, "He said they were a gift and promised to care for them but between you and me, he's become rather attached to them. I wouldn't be surprised if more show up soon. Honestly though, after they came around, he has broken other rules now and then." There was a soft smile now playing on her lips.

"May I ask A-yi, what do they call your son?"

The woman gave him a long look as if calculating something. "Lan Zhan. Courtesy Wangji."

If Wei Wuxian could smile any wider he definitely would. He gave the woman another polite bow. "This one is called Wei Ying. Courtesy Wuxian."

The woman hid her mouth once more with her sleeve as an expression mirroring Wei Wuxian's overcame her features. "At this time not many pass by here. Why don't you sit with me for a while and we can talk."

"It would be my pleasure."

"Alright, er-gege. I know you'll miss me. You can't bear to be away from your Wei Ying, right?" Wei Ying looked over at their tails already inching to embrace each other. "How about I write to you? You don't need to respond, I'll keep sending them anyway." Wei Ying grabbed Lan Zhan's hands, forcing him to face him now. Lan Zhan's grit his teeth, scowling, which only made Wei Ying laugh. "Aw, I knew you'd miss me. I'll be thinking of you too until we meet again." Then Wei Ying did what he had seen his father do with his mother many times. He kissed the back of Lan Zhan's hands.

Wei Ying heard a small gasp and looked up to find a shocked Lan Zhan. Then his face slowly turned red from the tips of his pointed ears to his cheeks while his face slowly contorted to a sneer before he snatched his hands away. To all the adults' shock, they watched as Lan Zhan pushed Wei Ying to the ground, then ran off back into the Cloud Recesses without another word.

Wei Wuxian is three days out from Gusu. He doesn’t mean to be, honestly. He’d been resolving a series of night hunts by word of mouth, one after another without paying any attention to where he was actually going, and now here he is, three days out from Gusu.

He blows a breath out and leans against Little Apple as he wonders if he should drop in on Lan Zhan unannounced. He’s sure his friend wouldn’t mind, but he’s also sure Lan Zhan is too busy with Chief Cultivator things to also have to deal with Wei Wuxian.

Ah, well, he thinks as he straightens up. He can at least enjoy Gusu itself – its scenery, its cute dialect, its Emperor’s Smile – before heading back out into places unknown (to him; unknown to him since he was dead for a bit there).

“A-Ying is sorry it’s dirty,” he murmured.

“No apologies needed, A-Ying,” she said quietly and pulled him gently back down so that she could tie up his hair. “Is this ribbon special to you?”

Not really, he thought. At least, however long ago, it was just a ribbon. But now, it was the ribbon his father had bought him because he said he liked the color. It was the ribbon his mother used to tie up his hair every morning or pulled on to tease him as she laughed brightly. It and the robes on his back when Meilin-jie found him were the only things he had left of his parents.

He nodded, because yes, it was special to him now, and she patted his shoulder when she was done with the knot and said, “Then we will endeavor to take good care of it.”
