Subscriber Mailbag: Q) Are you working on a quieter modem? We already have modems with optional mute buttons, but our older customers tell us they like the screeching because it reminds them of their departed spouses.

Had to learn how to install the internet gateway into the corporate MSMail email system. That used dial-up modems to exchange e-mail with the other corporate offices.

I miss New York. Explaining to a friend how dial-up modems worked, noticing a woman in her 60s listening, looking her way, and having her say "no, please keep going, this is fascinating". Helping an 80-year-old woman collect her spilled groceries and receiving her life story as a reward.

I met my husband on IRC (Internet Relay Chat) back when the Internet was text-based and modems squealed like a disrespected narcissist 🤭

Yes; for years Clarke refused to write a sequel to 2001, but the Voyager images of Jovian moons proved too much temptation, so he and his characters returned. Other new things: aerobraking, Cray-generated Jupiter, and using modems to collaborate across the world on a screenplay.

Things I don't really understand about my company. We do digital IF using digitizers to IP traffic modems using Vita49/DIFI framing. But the digital "modem" doesn't have a BER curve. Everything operates similar to analogue RF in theory, but the core is all digital.

"The microbee Computer-in-a-Book represents a novel, practical effective low cost way of advancing to disk drive capacity..." (Source.)

From the April '86 issue of Bits & Bytes. Up top, the text "The microbee Computer-in-a-Book represents a novel, practical effective low cost way of advancing to disk drive capacity..." Center, the Microbee itself, featuring a squat keyboard, a squat CRT, and what we'd now call a minitower format for their 3.5" disk drive. Below, it touts the features, the included software, and the prices ($1,350 for the 64K Microbee with single disk drive; $470 for spare disk drive with matching volume; and "ask" about Modems, Printers, and Business Software). At the bottom, the bumblebee logo for microbee computer, as well as their postal address and six-digit telephone number.

Remember the "hawk tuah" girl? That seems as long ago as dial-up modems. Remember silent movies? That's basically a similar length of time. Remember the Bronze Age? Remember the meteor that killed the dinosaurs? That was the same day
