Good thread & what often gets overlooked is an understanding of how magic (even in just "Western" societies) was historically understood to operate. The idea of codified, systemitized magic is something *incredibly* modern & reflects a post-Enlightenment understanding of metaphysics & epistemology
I recently started Christian Moevs' *The Metaphysics of Dante's Comedy* (Oxford University Press). The first chapter, "Empyrean," explores Dante's unique interpretation of the concept, contrasting it with theologians like Aquinas and Albert the Great. Lots of Neoplatonic & Aristotelian notes.
