🌿 A unique fact about bull kelp (Nereocystis luetkeana) is that it is one of the fastest-growing organisms on Earth 🌏, capable of growing up to 2 feet (60 cm) per day under optimal conditions! 📸: @underwaterpat.bsky.social#kelp#kelpforest#bullkelp#ocean#oregon#pnw
Nereocystis, Mermaids bladder- but most popularly known as Bull Kelp! Maybe its the color scheme? I'm not sure myself but painting kelp forests is always a very calming thing for me. Good thing a lot of the comic takes place under water! #watercolor#art
This is what it produced with the prompt “Draw a bull kelp (Nereocystis luetkeana) with all parts labelled”

Adobe AI Firefly’s attempt to make a bull kelp colouring page (prompt used: "a simple black and white line drawing of a bull kelp seaweed (nereocystis luetkeana) floating in the ocean"). The best so far, even with a bull kelp colouring page given as reference. Fascinating! #phycologyfriday
Long-term monitoring is crucial to understand how macroalgae respond to changing environments. Using functional traits can provide insights into their adaptive mechanisms, while studying early ontogeny helps anticipate vulnerabilities. (5/9)
Yes it is. Nereocystis leutkeana
A very interesting story. I think it’s too bad that the article didn’t include the genus (Durvillaea) anywhere nor a clarification that it is not a kelp, but a fucoid. I’m not surprised many of the comments here think it’s about Nereocystis.
it's my favourite kelp! and i didn't even know its common name until i grew up - its genus name Nereocystis is apparently one of the first words i learned as a toddler (after "adopting" one when my parents took me camping on Long Beach when i was wee)
