Another aspect I love is how it's basically a coming of age story, and it's not afraid to cover some pretty dark topics. Ness goes out into the real world, and encounters all the problems that come with it.
A lot of things that are still associated with hippie-ness (like astrology) are also things nazis loved. It's unsurprising to see crossover between astrologists for ex and any negative dogma. Astrology is like a game where one creates stereotypes for fun and spiritual materialism.
