we hear all the time about how major organizations don't want trans people covering trans issues and bristle at black journalists covering issues related to the black community. all of that is wrong! but i don't understand why the same logic isn't applied to someone whose family lives in israel.

Leadership of organizations can be bad, and that applies to unions, too. Being unwilling to criticize a union because you might sound anti-union is why other union leaderships don't criticize the police unions, for example. This is bad, IMO.

Depending on the state and the disaster type, this happens in the US too. We have very large faith-based disaster response organizations that work closely with FEMA, state national guard, etc.
