As one of the many thousands of people stuck at Euston last Thursday, I can confirm there was majorly overcrowding... My colleague sent me this from her platform. Climate change is happening now - train lines need better adaption measures to help cope with worsening weather.

Use of the latest antiseptic techniques was mixed in 1870.
Louis Pasteur's work on germ theory had reached the English surgeon Joseph Lister by 1865, and Lister's antiseptic theories had been published in the Lancet in 1867. By 1870, Lister's experiments in antiseptic surgery had lowered the percentage of deaths following amputation from 50 per cent to 15 per cent. On the German side, surgeons used carbolic acid spray to sterilize their operating areas and tools. The French, however, made little use of Lister's antiseptic techniques.
When French doctors spoke of hygiene, they referred to preventing overcrowding in the wards and maintaining medical supplies, but they did not discuss sterilization.
Linens, chloroform, quinine and trained doctors all ran in short supply as the war wore on. Death rates for amputations among the French reached 75 per cent (10,000 out of 13,000 cases, including fingers and toes).
