Precisely! I left academia ca 25 years ago and I have definitely not left science. In the meantime also started teaching and supervising PhD students and postdocs again.

Still space to sign up for the best meeting in evolutionary ecology. Great option for grad students and postdocs because the small meeting size makes it possible to talk with lots of PIs at length. I’ve recruited multiple of my postdocs from going to that meeting.

*maybe* for the postdocs, but if you're a grad student just learning the techniques and research methods, there's decent odds that you don't have the skills to spot that yet. And if something fails to replicate, as discussed in the article...

But: presumably their students and postdocs were the ones generating the data. And if they weren't, they had the responsibility of doing data forensics before allowing themselves to be associated with the data or the project. Even if the PI is ultimately responsible for the fraud 1/2

My dissertation advisor once advocated for postdocs as a way of—and I quote—"washing the stink off of your degree" despite the fact that I went to a ranked program. It just wasn't ranked *high* enough.

I really feel for these folks, especially the students + postdocs. So much of your early career is shaped by your association with your mentors (esp PIs, but also senior lab members) and we aren't good at holding those sr ppl accountable for misconduct in a way that doesn't also punish trainees

American science is so incredibly expensive. A graduate research assistant working 20hrs per week for 48 weeks costs as much as 2 full time postdocs in Mexico. I know, not apples to apples but…

What’s the logic behind a postdoc that you can only apply for if you already finished the PhD by the time you apply? It will skew applicants towards those that were rejected for other postdocs. If you want candidates who already did a postdoc, just say that.

denn ich weiß, was ich machen muss, damit es weiter geht. Die Bedingungen sind fair. Und faire Bedingungen wünsche ich mir eben auch für Doktorand*innen und Postdocs im System. #IchBinHanna#IchWarHanna (14/14)
