Any kind of true crime, for example, was tossed. Prison breaks, etc, tossed. Sexual violence, murder, etc, tossed. A lot of prisons are really puritanical about their books.

💯💯💯 I think it comes specifically from the undercurrent of puritanical values in the US/western culture. There's such a big pressure to conform and not rock the boat. With non violent resistance they can "move on" or otherwise not disrupt things TOO much. But violence forces them onto a side.

I’ll be honest, I don’t really care for the term “clean” when referring to romance books without sex in them - seems a bit puritanical to me. I’m borrowing the fandom term and saying fluffy romance 💛 It’s far less judgy!
