Your university covered them just full stop? Or do you have earmarked research funds that you used to pay for these memberships? I’ve never been at a university that covered them at all outside of research funds I (am lucky to) have and I’ve always worked at R1s.
yeah I'm just over the R1s being shocked at cutbacks when the real shock is that they still get any internal funding at this point at all. So many of us paying entirely out of pocket for any and all research costs since the get-go. Cutbacks suck. but read the room etc : (
The obsession with rankings which value PhD students more than MS students is certainly driving a push for PhD over MS students at many R1s at least. Here, MS students can broadly no longer be funded as TAs. Our dept was able to get a short reprieve but we all assume that this will not be renewed.

The R1S is fantastic but expensive and HUGE. R2 is in the sweet spot with both price and size.
Social-mobility top-20 list from 2015. I won't quibble with the particular rankings, but I think the general texture is right. Public R1s admit less well-off kids (on avg), train and credential them, provide access to a broader world, and have strong alumni networks. Engines for mobility.
While I understand this take, I respectfully disagree. Maybe it’s different at the top-of-the-top R1s, but at my R1 - where we’d get 30-40 apps per year for 2-5 spots - I wanted to give students every opportunity to feel like they mattered. If that meant 30 minutes on Zoom with 10-15 of them, great!
The second-gen R1S is slick and lease prices aren’t bad (I’ve been burned buying EVs that then tank as far as value so will lease my next one)

This is apples and oranges, but I get a dose of this with my own mid-tier education and my family is from the Northern Appalachians. But it's never as bad as academics from the South get (unless from elite R1s)
