Ribadesella is a charming place. Unforgettable experience - might be my favourite village in Northern Spain so far. Let’s see.

I mean, it’s an otherworldly landscape.

Vantage point of the fishing town of Ribadesella, carved in half by the mouth of the Sella river and fronted on the west side by the golden Playa de Santa Marina (beach). It’s set against the green-clad backdrop of the Picos de Europa mountains in the distance.

Good stroll along the seafront. I’m told there are the remains of dinosaur footprints along the beach somewhere… 🦕

Santa Marina seafront of Ribadesella. It passes close to the ancient palaces and mansions of the “Indianos” who emigrated and built luxurious mansions that overlook the sea on their return.

I’ve continued my route through the delightful towns of Asturias to Ribadesella. Who knew it’s the capital of canoeing. Not me.

Mosaic of the village during the festival of canoeing. Canoeists are paddling down the sea with onlookers in the crowd.

Moving onto Ribadesella next. It’s the town where the Sella River empties into the Bay of Biscay, on the Cantabrian Sea. The journey there gave an indication of the spectacular natural setting that awaited.

Sandy cove beach with golden sand and crystal clear blue waters.

Leaving mountain backed Oviedo to head east, towards the Ribadesella and Llanes area, and incredibly beautiful stretch of coastline. I’ll be visiting the fishing villages and beaches there. Let’s start the journey with San Vicente de la Barquera.

Mountain backed Oviedo – a city whose buildings and streets are surrounded by nature.
