didn't know about it until a few hours ago, but I finished episode one of Mirai Seiki Shibuya--a sci-fi drama about Youtubers in 2036........written and directed by Koji Shiraishi opens with vloggers visiting the slums for ~content~, ends with the actor from Occult exploding. we are so back
Thinking about Megalopolis and I think it's a misread to see Cesar as an uncritical self-insert for Coppola—the film draws a clear line from Cesar's razing of slums to the rise of fascism in the city, e.g. (I'd dispute the film's depiction of the masses as easily swayed suckers but that's different)
started earlier than we tend to think it did. HOWEVER, hopes does kind of present smth of an argument against this, bc it's clear his experience in the slums in houses affected his eventual policy choices & he's more attached to the monarchy in general bc he didn't have the experiences of houses
I just realized that the dog boy who gets executed at the beginning of Metaphor for "misusing an ignitor" probably had that shit planned on him. Dog boys from the slums literally have no access to them, they're too poor and ignitors are explicitly expensive as fuck.
I am struck by the similarity of the modus operandi of Israeli soldiers against the Palestinians and of police officers in Brazil against the inhabitants of the slums. There is a military character trait of torture from the same source of opression. #FreePalestine
Slums that are no longer slums b/c everything is safe and works, without rennovictions, definitely benefit the tenants!
