It has begun... After completing my certificate and diploma, I am starting the final phase of the #Strathclyde#genealogy

That's what I liked about History of Family, it sits in the history department but is genealogy adjacent. I couldn't believe one of the Strathclyde genealogy projects, which forbid us from adding historical context. Historical context is the best part!

I did the History of Family MA at University of Limerick this year (at the recommendation of @cbgenealogy.bsky.social@lazyloveruk.bsky.social@msfrugalone.bsky.social) and loved it. I came out of it feeling like I developed skills I will really use, whereas Strathclyde felt like a waste. 3/3

I quit after the cert year for this reason. I think it's just a moneymaker for Strathclyde, nothing more nor less. A lot of people were not ready for MSc-level work, which is why the course is three years (part time) when a regular History MSc is two years. 1/

I'm also not sure that people being interested in advanced topics necessarily correlates with wanting to get certified. I know a lot of my Strathclyde classmates want to do this for a living, but didn't seem interested in methodology. And I probably won't ever get certified but am very interested.

This is what I didn't like about the Strathclyde genealogy MSc. The first year's lectures were almost exclusively lists of records and resources. Almost nothing about methodology or skill-building. So disappointing.

Cool cafe at Uni Strathclyde where this week I enjoyed chatting with researchers over coffee about their qualitative research instead of via zoom. So nice
