I think secondary (rather than genetic) TMAU can be caused by very poor diet choices. It's normally caused by severe liver or kidney disease, but there have been cases where the person was just eating nothing but junk food and their gut bacteria had just given up.
Joking aside, I knew a woman with TMAU and it was HORRIBLE, and made even more horrible by the fact she was a perfect sweetheart who did not deserve to smell like a rotting shark.
