An alligator, its mouth a yawning chasm ringed with razor sharp teeth. The vivid green hide is tough and leathery. Alaric ponders one of those mysterious beliefs of childhood, the idea that every medieval castle moat is stocked with snarling alligators. Now that Alaric lives in Europe, in a castle no less, he can’t believe he ever believed the fairytale idea of alligators in a moat. Where did that idea even come from? Alaric suspects a 13th century bestiary, a bestiary Alaric himself now owns. Like many of the books in Alaric’s library, the book is bound in an animal hide. It’s not cow.
