Caregiving is a full time job, in addition to my actual full time job. If you're wondering how exhausted I am, I just tried to open my house door by clicking my car key fob at the doorknob.
Speaking as someone who has been doing involuntary, untrained and only marginally supported adult caregiving (and often being terrible at it) for the last 12 years, it doesnโt always improve in later life. Either the feeling that youโre doing it wrong or the lack of support, Unfortunately. :-(
there are lots of reasons to choose not to have kids, yeah! there are plenty of people like me (and maybe you, it sounds liek?) would want them if it weren't for [climate anxiety, politics, poverty, illness, work taking precedence, caregiving responsibilities, etc etc]
I teach at a commuter school. When in-person classes are cancelled, many of these students will have their family suddenly at their houses, all clamoring for a WiFi connection. And if the parents have to work, the students might need to assume caregiving responsibilities.

I wonder if some of this comes from adult kids who have caregiving responsibilities for elderly parents. Have to drive Mom everywhere because we nuked transit & walkable neighborhoods.
