Raphael Lemkin, who coined genocide, said that the slaughter of the Cathars counted as a genocide. I think genocide is a modern term for a phenomenon that has happened throughout history, or at least that’s how Lemkin looked at it. He was a lawyer after all, genocide is a legal term first
