Yeah, I stumbled upon it in 2021 from an @askhistorians.bsky.social question from, I think 2018? The question was about whether the ancients believed the Underworld was a place you could actually visit. I went to the Oracle of the Dead site not expecting much, maybe some academic Classicist thing.

Yes, yes and yes; most people are repeating in good faith stuff they’ve read on apparently reliable websites. Even the famous example of Colin Powelk’s “Of all manifestations of power, restraint impresses men most” was result of terrible citation practice by an otherwise reputable classicist.

This is when my favorite college prof, the classicist John Wyatt, would go VERY Socratic Method. "So, MR Eyeroll? You seem to disagree? Can you explain?" Or, would spend the rest of the semester making many points in class by saying "But we know that Mr Eyeroll doesn't believe in voting, so ..."

91) As a Classicist fluent in Latin, Lovecraft was asked by a schoolteacher friend of his to judge his students' Latin translations. One student singled out for praise was a young Black woman (name withehld, but I've gone through the yearbook and can make a reasonable guess).
