I can’t think of any other illness where early diagnosis and proper management is as crucial as in post-acute infection syndromes. If Post-exertional Malaise is recognized and managed properly, I have seen complete recovery – if not, they often progress to ME/CFS, a severe neuroimmunological disease. 😞 There’s plenty of evidence of ongoing inflammation, thrombotic endothelialitis, dysfunction of complement system, metabolic and structural damage in muscles which deteriorate after over-exertion. You can even transmit Long Covid from humans to mice by transferring immunoglobulins. If you see a patient with headaches, gastrointestinal symptoms, flu like symptoms, malaise… starting 1 to 3 days after sports or strenuous cognitive activity, think of Long Covid! https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2024.05.30.596590v1
