figures for power consumption of LLMs were taken from the paper for BLOOM, which is legendarily inefficient, and which was not running batch inference or doing any of the other things that are known to dramatically improve efficiency
Pollution is another problem, more of a vanishing gradient/efficiency problem. War as well (a consequence of low balance of power and low transparency, which causes painful miscalculations).
As someone who studied econ as an undergrad at a fancy place, i know the official response is that you just need to put someone in charge who is maximizing profit, and the system mystically converges on perfect efficiency, assuming that everyone is omniscient
Obvious problem with high-variance technologies, be they AI or solutions to aging - balance of power/overfitting. But moderation/morals works, and for AI, transparency and efficiency reqs. for large-scale deployments. Better aging solutions are also changing balance of power, but quite slowly.

Ffs he sexually abused a pastor? How bad does quid pro quo harassment have to be to get not 1, not 2, but 3 cops to risk their careers and sue the guy who has total control over NYPD promotions? And somehow he has that control despite no longer working there! archive.is/RPl9W
I do think replacing attic insulation can be deducted under the energy efficiency credits in the IRA but I might be wrong

And this guy wants to be the guy who will run the “department of government efficiency”😳
