I’ve been translating professionally for 25 years! I started work in York in October 1999, then worked for two government departments in London. I also started teaching translation 20 years ago, initially at Imperial College London and University of Surrey, went freelance, and so the story continues

The Mausoleum of Galla Placidia was built on the orders of the late Roman imperial noblewoman in the early fifth century, in Ravenna Italy. Despite the beautiful surrounds and stunning mosaics, she's not buried there - the (very pious) Galla was buried in Rome.

Exterior view of the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia in Ravenna, Italy. A small brick building with arched windows and a central tower, surrounded by trees. A group of tourists is lined up outside the entrance, waiting to enter. The sky is overcast, and modern buildings are visible in the background.
Another interior mosaic from the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia. The arched ceiling is adorned with a deep blue mosaic studded with golden stars and white floral patterns. Below, a lunette mosaic shows Christ as the Good Shepherd, surrounded by sheep in a pastoral setting. The figure of Christ has a golden halo and is dressed in golden robes, standing among trees and rocks.
Mosaic in the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, Ravenna. A lunette depicts Christ holding a cross and book, standing next to a burning grill. On the left is a cabinet labeled 'MARCUS LUCAS' containing scrolls. The scene is framed by an ornate arch with a starry night sky pattern above, featuring golden stars and floral motifs on a dark blue background.
Interior of the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia in Ravenna, showing intricate mosaic work. The vaulted ceiling is adorned with a dark blue mosaic studded with golden stars. A central lunette depicts two figures in white robes gesturing towards a glowing window. The arches are decorated with ornate patterns and figures. Below, another arch partially visible shows a figure holding a cross. The entire scene is richly decorated with geometric and floral motifs in gold, blue, and earthy tones.
