I should mention: I live near Denver and the altitude of Ouray/Black Canyon gives me a little bit of trouble. Arches isn't noticeably different from Denver, but once you're over 2000 meters, almost everyone feels it.

If you have some extra time/want a side quest and the weather isn't adventurous, Ouray in extreme western Colorado is amazing and can easily be combined with the Black Canyon of the Gunnison (someone posted about that already). Hot springs! Gorgeous mountains!

My annual guys hiking trip was this past weekend. We went to Ouray, CO. Kinda near Telluride west of the Rockies. Ouray is at 8000 feet. We hiked up to 11,700 ft. That is thin air holy cow. I think we hit peak color, too.

Personally know two people who were killed in avalanches while they were skiing. I've been in two exceedingly spooky situations where I give a lot of pause before I ski, say, a big line off Red Mountain Pass south of Ouray…
