The paths fall apart on the Humberhead Peatlands and the firelight sinks. All we could save, buried heat and blankets, a blind surface. (65/68, 'White Thorns', 2017)

What happens to the world if forests stop absorbing carbon? Ask Finland https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2024/oct/15/finland-emissions-target-forests-peatlands-sinks-absorbing-carbon-aoe
"For decades, [Finland's] forests & peatlands had reliably removed more carbon from the atmosphere than they released. But from about 2010, the amount absorbed started to decline ... In 2021-22, Finlandâs land sector was a net contributor to global heating." www.theguardian.com/environment/...
The natural sinks of forests and peat were key to Finlandâs ambitious target to be carbon neutral by 2035. But the land now emits more greenhouse gases than it stores
. why invest 22 billion in technical carbon capture in the UK, when peatlands are our largest natural carbon store?! peatland restoration and creation equals effective & meaningful #ClimateActioniucn.org/resources/issues-b... .
Peatlands are a type of wetland which are critical for preventing and mitigating the effects of climate change, preserving biodiversity, minimising flood risk, and ensuring safe drinking water. Peatlands are the largest natural terrestrial carbon sto

Peatlands are vital in the global carbon cycle, acting as significant sinks for carbon and releasing methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphe...

In addition to fires in intact peatlands, deliberate draining of peatlands that have been converted to farming - mainly dairying - produces an estimated 4.2 million tonnes of carbon dioxide a year. Is that counted in Fonterraâs already massive pollution footprint? www.rnz.co.nz/news/environ...
Two fires that tore through sensitive peat wetlands in 2022 released more than half a million tonnes of carbon dioxide, pushing emissions from New Zealand's peat soils as a whole to a level comparable...

Unfortunately not easy to find info in english, as much of the discussion about peatland conversions/forest conversions etc. are in finnish, or in government reports (mostly in finnish).. But yeah, we have a lot of peatlands in different forms, and that is added complication to land sink discussion
