and that’s to say nothing of joy. someone last fall asked for transition in 100 words or fewer (lol i did not choose fewer; i hit 153) & i stand by it. • world’s shitty! • transition gave me access to me • now *that* me feels joy, fights shit, has nice crusty bread • what else could i want?

i’m a kid & autumn smells lovelysweet through the screen door as i sit baretoed on the living room shag. windsound is softsighs; rain on drifting leafrot is a gentle, lazy, ongoing drumroll, like the quiet announcement of a wonderful something that will happen in its own good time. a howly gust through the mesh stipples my forearms with goosebumps that feel good to rub.

i’m safewarmdry in the living room, basking in the outside inside, when an adult comes & pushes the door’s glass pane down. “we’re not paying to heat the outdoors, kiddo,” they say, & suddenly autumn’s distant. sterile. when i reach to touch it, all i feel is coolsmooth glass, unctuous from fingertip oil & heat.

now this reverses. crosslegged & baretoed, cozysafe behind the screen door of my own happy home, i can smell, hear, feel autumn again. i belong to & exist in the world.
