"your friends frantically reading a xenobiology book as you're elbows-deep in an alien's chest cavity" sounds fucking brilliant, actually.

I mean, I've heard it also defined as non-human behaviors, which is IRL functionally equivalent to animals, but in an SFF context could be seen as a bigger umbrella? Dunno. I've used xenobiology and xenoarchaeology, but neither of those are quite on the mark. Punt and go with xenology (-:
Well if the root meaning "antrop" is "human" and "ology" is "the study of"… And "xeno" is "other, or different in origin"… Could we not then surmise that "Xenology" would be the "study of something different in origin" in the same way that "Xenobiology" is used?
I’d suggest xenology, but it looks like that discipline already exists and skews toward the xenobiology end of things. Argh. I’ll let you know if I come up with anything better.
And less loaded. I feel like xenobiology carries a burden of implication that humanity sees the aliens as animals or lesser.
I immediately jumped to xenobiology, but that doesn't cover behavior, which would have to be xenoethology. There's also exopsychology, the study of alien intelligence. ...I'm starting to understand why xenoanthropology was chosen, the more I look. Lol
