Rebecca Solnit’s book “A Paradise Built In Hell” should be required reading for everyone. Basically: people are generally good & in disaster situations self-organize effectively & often joyfully. It’s when authority tries to “restore order,” that shit goes off the rails.

As of March, 18.6 million Americans were estimated to be living with long COVID. I am one of them. I would consider it a personal favor if you contact your reps and request support for this bill. We need help.

I keep listening to the radio out of Asheville and hearing a person calling in to locate folks and another calling back to say they just went and checked on them because they’re nearby and no they don’t know them but they’re okay—we do not need cops after disaster, we do need community radio

This part.

Everyone’s mad at us for not evacuating. But no one is telling us where to evacuate to. Not everyone has a house in Texas or $200 for hotel stays and I had to work until 9pm last night

I find it striking how in the aftermath of Helene, libraries are providing crucial community services like free wifi while cops are guarding stores with rotting food from potential "looters" instead of serving and protecting people. Worth considering how we spend local funding.
