THERE IS NO EXACT VERSION OF ANY WORK OF ART EVER AT ANY POINT IN ANY ARTIST'S HEAD THERE IS AN IMPULSE A DRIVE A KERNEL A SPARK THE WORK IS DISCOVERED IN THE MAKING OF THE WORK THE WORK IS CONSTANTLY REDISCOVERED IN THE READING OF THE WORK BY EVERYONE FOR EVERYONE INCLUDING THE ARTIST NOT AI

Twitter post: someone suggests that Vincent Van Gogh could have AI-generated The Starry Night and it would still be his art. A far smarter person points out that entering that prompt would NOT generate The Starry Night, "because the original wouldn't exist for the machine to fucking copy".

I thought this was good. It also has me thinking about the fact that only certain kinds of people in this industry get to be "wunderkinds" or "rising stars." jeremyfassler.medium.com/olivia-nuzzi...

Journalists who’ve defended Nuzzi need to look at themselves in the mirror following her involvement with RFK Jr.

If you've ever doubted the value of editing rewriting, let me share with you this iconic and instantly-recognizable speech - and one of its first drafts.

Final draft: Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Its five-year mission: to explore strange new worlds; to seek out new life and new civilizations; to boldly go where no man has gone before!
Early draft: This is the adventure of the United Space Ship Enterprise. Assigned a five year galaxy patrol, the bold crew of the giant starship explores the excitement of strange new worlds, uncharted civilizations, and exotic people. These are its voyages and its adventures...

If, like me, you think that the clear way forward is to elect Kamala Harris in 2024, this is one of the times I think a direct campaign donation is super worthwhile. This is the link Joe Biden shared on Twitter for people to donate to support Kamala Harris's campaign. t.co/A0T3v7ItQm

Some of my grad school friends just published a neat perspective! They share pros/cons of imagined alternative academic practices, from a match system for jobs to doing only arxiv-style pubs. It's a cool launch point for musing on other alternatives: agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1029/...

Replaying the Tape of Academia: Fourteen Alternative Practices for the Physical Sciences

Modern academic practices reflect elements of both contingency and determinism Consideration of alternative practices can guide within-system change and large-scale restructuring

Biden has a bad debate night: calls to step down Documents released that show two underage women accused Trump of raping them on Epstein’s island, under oath: total media silence except in a few blogs and foreign news The media double standard is incredible to see

Someone responded that they were more upset that active shooter drills are necessary. They are not. They make no difference to fatalities. The children in Uvalde followed the training rigorously. It is all a ruse to make the adults feel like they're doing something. It's pointless traumatization.
